i saw this banner on the news last night during a discussion about new airport security measures:
"Islamic groups protest pat downs for Muslim women"
the discussion continued to say that Ms Napolitano was considering the protests.
are you freaking kidding me?
let's change the wording just a TINY bit for the banner.
"Christian groups protest pat downs for Christian women."
the change is laughable. you will NEVER see that banner as a news headline. why? because we have allowed our country to become so politically correct that Christianity is down trodden and oppressed, while Islam and other religions get very special consideration and concern so as not to offend or make them uncomfortable. Ms Napolitano would never "consider" a Christian protest to her security measures. She would simply tell them to find other means of transportation if they were uncomfortable. Talk about discrimination. Because that is precisely what this is.
this is completely outrageous.
it would be like reverse profiling. kinda like reverse discrimination found in affirmative action. (oops, did i say that out loud?) we don't want to profile Muslims to the point that we will consider allowing them exemptions to seemingly vital and important new security measures.
that makes total sense.
NOT.
I looked into bus trips and fares for my brother who goes to school in Maine to come home for the holidays. It would take him almost THREE days to get here instead of one by flying. So a US white Christian citizen who has a clean record and is a law abiding citizen either subjects himself to extremely invasive searching (like someone who has been arrested and suspected of a crime) because of a choice to fly (is choosing to fly a crime now?), or he spends almost a WEEK of (dare I say) CHRISTMAS break traveling. (or, radical thought, he converts to Islam so he is now a coddled minority? hmmmm, where does THAT thought lead...)
I really like how it started with the naked body scans and progressed to full body pat downs. There are several ways my mind goes with that.
One, for little kids (we can't profile, so EVERYONE --except possibly Muslim women-- has to be subject to these measures to be politically correct and non-discriminatory) this touching becomes "normalized." It's okay if someone with authority informs you first where they are going to touch you, to keep you safe (psych major who worked with abused children...not to mention Mom who has a child and plans to have more).
Two, (continuing with the psych major thought process) it becomes a game of the lesser of two evils. It's like going to your parents and asking them if they will buy you a car, and then asking them if you can have $20 to go out with friends. By asking for something outrageous first, the second request seems less of a big deal. (Unless you have parents like mine who are uninfluenced by psych tricks like that. But that is another story.) Would you rather be groped and handled by a stranger in a uniform, or just have someone non-invasively look at a scan of your body?
NEITHER.
Three, it promotes the idea that I would rather feel safe (there are no guarantees) and be subject to invasive searching rather than be considered discriminatory (except to whites or Christians who deserve to be demoralized). I'll give up my freedoms to take advantage of modern technology and comforts to make sure that others never feel uncomfortable because I profiled them. It's patriotic to sacrifice your comfort and freedoms so everyone can feel equal and safe. Especially the Muslims. We want them to be safe and equal. But not the Christians. They just need to suck it up and sacrifice for the greater good. Never mind the first amendment.
How is it that what happens in our bedrooms is completely private, thou shalt not go there as proclaimed by the supreme court, but what happens in our pants is not private? (Sorry, I had to go there.) Really? Pat downs for law abiding citizens really isn't a privacy invasion? Could someone please define a privacy invasion for me? SINCE WHEN ARE MY PRIVATES NOT PRIVATE?
